Abimbola’s career spans 25 years after graduating from the University of Ife, Nigeria with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Building. She gained necessary practical experience upon graduation at Bouygues (Nig) Ltd (BNL) a multi-national Building and Civil Engineering Company. At BNL, she gained a lot of relevant experience whilst on the job and also had the opportunity of self-improvement through their various staff training and development programmes. The staff-training programmes afforded her the opportunity to study further and obtain a Masters Degree with Distinction in Construction Management from the University of Lagos in 1990. In July 1998, after a short stint at the Lagos State Polytechnic, she joined the staff of the Department of Building at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Nigeria as a Lecturer. On joining the university, Abimbola focused on improving her teaching and research profile. She was promoted to the position of senior lecturer in 2005 the same year that she obtained her PhD. She was elected to the position of Sub – Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Lagos for the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 academic sessions. Abimbola joined the Department of Construction Economics and Management at the University of Cape Town as senior lecturer in August 2009. Abimbola a registered professional builder also undertakes a limited amount of professional consultancy so as to continually update her knowledge of happenings in the building industry.

Abimbola has served as External Examiner to the Dept of Building, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Imo State University, Nigeria.
Abimbola serves on the editorial board of the Building Quarterly Journal and the Professional Builder Journal (Nigeria).
