Manya has worked in the Department of Land Economy of the Copperbelt University in Zambia, the Department of Land Management at the Polytechnic of Namibia and, since 2006, in the Department of Construction Economics & Management at the University of Cape Town. Before entering the higher education sector, Manya briefly worked as a property consultant in private practice.

Manya has acted as external examiner of masters theses for the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is (or has acted as) an external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the Polytechnic of Namibia.
Manya is an ad hoc referee for the international journals Urban Studies and Journal of Housing and the Built Environment
