After graduating Ian served as a Scientific Officer in the British Geological Survey. He then moved to the National Coal Board (Opencast Executive) in Scotland. In 1981 he joined Shell Oil Company where he worked prospecting and evaluating Coal, and later Gold mining prospects in South Africa. During this time he studied and graduated from UNISA with an MBL. In 1989 Ian made a career change and moved into the marketing and later IT area of Shell where he began practicing project management by implementing internal systems and marketing processes to industrial customers. From 2001 Ian worked with BP implementing systems in the Southern and Eastern African region. This gave him some 18 years of experience in systems and business change related project management within the Oil industry. The scope of projects ranges from technology scanning, business case development, process control technologies, point of sale and pump automation through to implementation of transaction and MIS systems and IT infrastructure.
He holds PMP certification with the Project Management Institute (USA) and has held APM Group (UK) PRINCE2 project practitioner status. In addition, he has written training courses for project managers including one aimed at assisting others to obtain PMP status.
Project success criteria and value management, Particularly in areas of public service delivery and in large capital projects involving complex technology.
Ian is currently undertaking a PhD in the field of Value Management and its potential use to enhance local government service delivery.
Within the department Ian teaches project finance, quality management, human resource management (leadership, change management, motivation), and some aspects of research methodology on the masters programmes.
On undergraduate courses Ian teaches value, project and risk management as well as database design for MS access and geology related to construction site investigation.
Ian has a great interest in management science and writes articles and book reviews for the PMSA Journal ‘ProjectNet’. He is a past President of the Cape Town branch of the Project Management Institute of SA .
Ian is an external examiner for MSc students at Nelson Mandela University, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal and MTech and BTech students at Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
